Jakarta Is Now Among the World’s Top 50 Shopping Cities

In short: Jakarta ranks 39th in Travel And Tour World’s Top 50 Shopping Destinations in the World for 2026, announced on 10 September 2026. It is the fifth Southeast Asian city on the list, after Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. The ranking is an editorial assessment, not a measure of retail sales.

A city of malls is how many people first describe Jakarta. A new global ranking suggests the picture is wider than that: luxury malls sit alongside traditional markets, heritage districts and a growing number of local brands, and the city is becoming easier to move around.

This guide explains where Jakarta sits in the 2026 ranking, what the ranking actually measures, how the city’s shopping scene is changing and where each kind of shopping is found.

Where does Jakarta rank in 2026?

Travel And Tour World (TTW), a travel media platform, published its Top 50 Shopping Destinations in the World for 2026 on 10 September 2026. London is first, followed by Milan, New York City, Shanghai and Paris. Jakarta is 39th.

Six Southeast Asian cities are on the list:

A second index points the same way. The World’s Best Cities 2026 report by Resonance places Jakarta in its global top 10 for the Shopping subcategory.

What does the ranking measure?

TTW describes the list as an independent editorial assessment. It is not based solely on retail sales, luxury rents, visitor spending or commercial performance. TTW says it reviewed more than 100 destinations before shortlisting 50, using official tourism-board information, destination guides, retail studies and travel publications.

Each destination was scored out of 100 on nine weighted criteria:

CriterionWeight
Shopping diversity15%
Local shopping culture15%
Luxury retail12%
Budget shopping and bargains12%
Iconic shopping areas12%
Unique shopping experiences10%
Accessibility and infrastructure10%
Traveller appeal8%
Sustainability and local value6%

Source: TTW research methodology, 10 September 2026.

The weighting explains Jakarta’s place on the list. Almost half of the score (42%) rewards variety, local culture and bargains, where a city with large malls, traditional markets and its own craft traditions does well. Accessibility counts for 10%, and that is where Jakarta has been improving fastest.

What does the ranking say about Jakarta?

TTW’s entry for Jakarta highlights three things:

  • The mix. Luxury malls, local markets and Indonesian craftsmanship in one city.
  • What to buy. Batik, jewellery, fashion, coffee, handicrafts, beauty products and contemporary local labels.
  • The places. Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, Senayan City, Kota Tua and Pasar Baru, with Tanah Abang Market and street markets for bargains.

For people who live in Jakarta, the list is a reminder of how much of this sits within a short journey. The same city that has international flagship stores also has large textile and craft markets.

How is Jakarta’s shopping scene changing?

Three changes stand out, and each one shows up in the criteria the ranking uses.

Old landmarks have been rebuilt. Sarinah on Jalan MH Thamrin reopened on 21 March 2022 after a renovation, according to Antara. It now focuses on Indonesian products and local brands.

New retail is part of mixed-use towers. Thamrin Nine on Jalan MH Thamrin combines offices, a hotel and Agora Mall, which also houses the UP at Thamrin Nine observation deck. The deck soft-opened in June 2025, according to Agora Mall. Our guide to Brightspot Jakarta at Agora Mall shows how the mall is used for local creative events.

The MRT is reaching more shopping districts. MRT Jakarta’s first line, 15.7 km from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI, opened in 2019 and already serves Blok M, Senayan and Thamrin. The extension north from Bundaran HI is due to reach Monas by the end of 2027 and Kota by the end of 2029. These targets were given during a site visit by the Vice President and the Minister of Transportation, reported by the Ministry of Transportation on 12 May 2026. Kota is the station for Kota Tua, one of the districts TTW names.

Where to shop in Jakarta, by area

Each kind of shopping has its own part of the city. These four areas cover most of what the ranking describes. Our Jakarta area guides explain what each area is like to live in.

AreaWhat you find thereGetting there
Thamrin and Bundaran HIGrand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia, Sarinah and Agora Mall at Thamrin Nine, from flagship stores to Indonesian brandsMRT Bundaran HI

Markets work differently from malls. Prices are often agreed rather than fixed, so compare a few stalls before you buy.

Living close to Jakarta’s shopping districts

For daily life, the shopping that matters most is the one you can reach without a car. Noble Properties Asia lists homes with direct access to a shopping mall, from residences connected to malls in Thamrin to serviced apartments in SCBD.

What does the ranking mean if you live in Jakarta?

The ranking is an editorial view, so read it as a signal rather than a score. What it captures is real, though:

  • Range. Jakarta offers one of the widest ranges of shopping in the region, from international flagships to traditional markets.
  • Access. It is steadily easier to reach without a car, as the MRT extends towards Kota.

If you are new to the city, the quickest way to make use of that is to know which district serves which need. Then choose a home that puts your everyday shopping within easy reach.
